Weight Loss Surgery And The Different Types Available

Although lap band surgery has become the most popular weight loss treatment method, yet some people are in doubt about its advantages. Hence, we will mention here different types of weight loss surgery methods to help you decide on your own, which is the best.

Basically, there are four main different types of weight loss surgery options for weight loss. These are Vertical banded gastroplasty (VBG), Laparoscopic gastric banding (Lap-Band), Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RGB), and Biliopancreatic diversion (BPD). We will discuss each and every one of them separately, so that you can pick up the best one for yourself.

In the vertical banded gastroplasty (VBG), surgical staples are utilized to split the stomach into two portions. The upper part is of small size and it limits the area for food. In this method the food empties to the lower pouch from the upper pouch via a small opening. This opening is covered with a band so that it does not stretch.

The risks associated with VBG include erosion of the band & crack-up of staple line. There have been few cases where the stomach cases have leaked into abdomen. Due to its complication there can be some cases of infection and death as well.

Among different types of weight loss surgery methods, laparoscopic gastric banding (Lap band) is the most acknowledged form of obesity treatment. In this, first an expansive band is set around the upper stomach. This makes a small pouch & constrictive path into the remaining stomach. This helps to restrict the consumption of food and creates a prior feeling of gastronomic fulfillment.

After the band is placed properly it is inflated with saline. This band is used for seriously obese people, like those who are minimum hundred pounds overweight or who are twice their required body weight or those who have been unsuccessful to lose weight through other means.

The band is placed permanently, but can also be removed whenever required. Lap banding is a completely reversible process. Some complications may occur in this treatment like band slippage, nausea and vomiting, pouch enlargement, abdominal pain and heartburn, thouhg these can usually be treated.

Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RGB) is another weight loss surgery. In this, surgical staples are used to make the stomach smaller and create a little stomach pouch. This pouch is affixed to the middle of the small intestine. The consumed food goes straight into the middle of small intestine via small opening. This decreases the amount of food you can eat and lessens the calories and nutrients absorbed by the body.

RGB has one high risk, dumping syndrome. This takes place when stomach contents move very fast through small intestine. The side effects are infection, pulmonary embolism, gallstones, leaking, and nutritional deficiency.

Biliopancreatic diversion (BPD) is not used commonly in the United States. In this, a huge part of stomach is separated. The amount of food and stomach acid creation is restricted. The small pouch is connected straight to the last section of the small intestine. It completely bypasses other parts of the small intestine. It carries a high risk of nutritional deficiencies.

Among different types of weight loss surgery methods you can now choose the one you think is best.
